Nantucket Boating Club
Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

Who may operate the boat

If you are at least 25 years old and pass an NBC training class, you are eligible to become an NBC member and take a boat out as “captain.” NBC will arrange for all necessary training by a licensed captain here on Nantucket.

Enjoying some raftingHow many guests may be brought along?

The “captain” may invite as many guests as the stated capacity for a given boat. Some of our boats safely handle up to 10 persons.

Can I get a boat on weekends and holidays?

Of course you can, so long as you plan ahead a few days. Like reservations for court times or tee times, the earlier you reserve the more likely you are to get the booking you want. NBC allows members to have one reservation block per weekend, and the boating times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are split into two blocks. NBC limits the number and types of memberships each season to assure that all members have plenty of opportunity to make the most of their memberships.

How do I schedule?

There are several ways to make a reservation. The primary method is online, where members can view available opportunities, then select and confirm their choices. You may also email or phone in your requests. Each membership may have two reservations confirmed up to two weeks in advance and one reservation per weekend. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day are considered weekend days.

Are there additional costs or fees?

You only pay for the fuel you use. Boat instrumentation is used to determine fuel usage, saving you a visit to the fuel dock. You will receive an itemized listing of your charges.

What do I need to know about boating?

Nothing to start with! We will help you learn everything you need to know to be a safe and confident boater.
Your membership also includes a comprehensive, on-the-water orientation as your first outing, where you can show off your skills with an experienced captain to guide you.

Do I need special gear or equipment?

No, since each boat is equipped with a GPS plotter, a depth finder, a fish finder, a VHF ship-to-shore radio, and all safety and convenience equipment required by State and Federal laws. If fishing is your thing, bring along your own gear.
Certain local marinas will offer a discount for new NBC members wishing to buy optional convenience items like deck shoes or instructional books.

What boats are available?

The Nantucket Boating Club selects only the safest boats for our fleet; boats designed for the conditions normally found around Nantucket. The fleet currently includes the Boston Whaler 210 Ventura and the Boston Whaler 210 Outrage. The Ventura 210 is a bowrider model that can comfortably accommodate 2 families and features a private head ( a bathroom). The 210 Outrage is a center console boat perfect for fishing. NBC Outrage boats include many options such as a bait prep station to make your fishing experience even better. NBC continually evaluates our fleet mix to assure that member needs are being met, and we welcome member input in this and all aspects of Club operations.

Tell me about the staff?

Ryan Fitch is the General Manager of the club and has operated a kayak rental business on Nantucket for many years. The rest of our NBC staff members are college students who have a love for (and often a family background on) the local Nantucket waters. You will find everyone well trained, professional, helpful and friendly. They know that the Nantucket Boating Club’s only purpose is to provide safe, hassle-free boating fun for our members and their families and friends.
